Sialoendoscopy of Salivary Glands
What is sialoendoscopy?
Sialoendoscopy is a minimally invasive technique used to examine and treat salivary gland disorders. This technique allows the salivary duct and glands to be visualized using an endoscope, facilitating the diagnosis and treatment of various conditions.
Indications
Sialoendoscopy is indicated for:
Salivary stones (sialoliths): When stones are present in the salivary ducts.
Recurrent infections: To treat infections in the salivary glands.
Narrowings (Strictures): To evaluate and treat narrowed ducts.
Tumors: To evaluate suspected salivary gland masses.
Inflammatory disorders: To treat conditions such as sialadenitis.
Procedure
Pre-Evaluation: A complete medical history and relevant examinations are performed to determine the need for the procedure.
Anesthesia: Local anesthesia is generally used, although in some cases general anesthesia may be required.
Endoscope Insertion: A thin, flexible endoscope is inserted through the opening of the salivary duct, allowing the interior of the gland to be viewed.
Diagnosis and Treatment: During the procedure, procedures may be performed to remove stones, take biopsies, or wash the gland.
Recovery: Recovery is rapid, and most patients can return to their daily activities shortly after the procedure.
